An Exploratory Study of Foot Strike Patterns and Running Related Urinary Incontinence in Recreational Female Runners (Wiebe et al. 2025*)
Excited to share more results from my research exploring interactions between running and pelvic health needs at the Female Athlete Conference (On-Demand post-conference proceedings). One of our guiding questions as we look through all of our data is: Can we identify modifiable variables, such as foot strike patterns, that may offer new assessment and intervention strategies to reduce impact-related issues that are commonly associated with running-related urinary incontinence. We will be sharing some of our results looking at associations between:
-Peak resultant acceleration at initial contact
-Foot strike patterns (forefoot, rearfoot, and mid foot)
-Running-related urinary incontinence
Pelvic floor concerns in female athletes have recently been identified as a research priority by the International Olympic Committee (see more info here IOC identified female athlete health domains) Thrilled to continue to explore variables that support these new priorities.
